Biography

Yahya Rahmat-Samii received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the B.S. degree, with the highest distinctions, in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tehran, Iran. Before joining UCLA in 1989, he was a Senior Research Scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory/California Institute of Technology. He was a Guest Professor at the Technical University of Denmark (TUD) in the summer of 1986. He has also been a consultant to many aerospace companies. He served as Chair of UCLA's Electrical Engineering Department from April 2000 through June 2005. Since 2007, he is holder of the Northrop Grumman Chair in Electromagnetics at UCLA.

Prof. Rahmat-Samii has authored and co-authored over 750 technical journal articles and conference papers and has written 25 book chapters. He is the co-author of three books. He is also holder of several patents. He has had pioneering research contributions in diverse areas of electromagnetics, antennas, measurement and diagnostics techniques, numerical and asymptotic methods, satellite and personal communications, antennas for remote sensing and astronomical applications, human/antenna interactions, frequency selective surfaces, electromagnetic and photonic band gap structures and the applications of the genetic algorithms and particle swarm optimization, etc. On several occasions, Prof. Rahmat-Samii’s work has made the cover of several journals and magazines and has been featured on several TV newscasts.

Dr. Rahmat-Samii was the elected 1995 President and 1994 Vice-President of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. He was elected as a member of the IEEE AP-S AdCom for two terms. He was appointed an IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Distinguished Lecturer and presented lectures internationally. Dr. Rahmat-Samii was elected as a Fellow of IEEE in 1985. He was also a member of the Strategic Planning and Review Committee (SPARC) of IEEE. He was the IEEE AP-S Los Angeles Chapter Chairman (1987-1989) and his chapter won the best chapter awards in two consecutive years. He was millennium session speaker and organizer at 2000 IEEE AP-S/URSI international symposia. He has also been a short course presenter and session organizer at many international Symposia.

Prof. Rahmat-Samii is a full member of Commissions A, B, J and K of USNC/URSI. He has been elected as a member-at-large of USNC/URSI for two terms and currently serves as USNC Secretary. Since 1978, he has been a US delegate to all General Assemblies of URSI. He has also been appointed as a plenary session speaker at several USNC and URSI General Assembly conferences. Twice he was an invited author for the Modern Radio Science. He was also Commission B editor of the Review of the Radio Science for the period of 1996-1999. Dr. Rahmat-Samii was one of the guest lecturer at URSI 75th anniversary held in Belgium. In 1984, Dr. Rahmat-Samii received the coveted Henry Booker Award of USNC/URSI that is given triennially to the most outstanding young radio scientist in North America. Recently, he has been serving on the Henry Booker and Young Scientist Awards Committee. Several of his students have won various USNS/URSI paper contest awards. In 2005 he received the URSI Booker Gold Medal.

Dr. Rahmat-Samii was one of the directors and Vice President of the Antennas Measurement Techniques Association (AMTA) for three years. He has been editor and guest editor of many technical journals and book publication entities. He was the co-editor of the special issue of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Transactions on “Wireless Communications” in 1998 and “Optimization Techniques in Engineering Electromagnetics” in 2007. He has also served as the Chairman and Co-Chairman of several national and international symposia. Dr. Rahmat-Samii was also a member of UCLA's Graduate council for a period of three years. He has served on many NSF, NASA, DoD and Industrial panels.

Research Interests
Professor Rahmat-Samii's research interests include: Satellite communications antennas, personal communication antennas including human interactions, wearable and implanted antennas for communications and biotelemetry, antennas for remote sensing and radio astronomy applications. Advanced numerical and optimization techniques in electromagnetics, genetic algorithms and particle swarm optimization, frequency selective surfaces and electromagnetic/photonic band gap structures, meta materials, novel integrated and fractal antennas, near-field antenna measurements and diagnostic techniques, electromagnetic theory.
