Courses and Curriculum Committee
(Adopted on August 23, 2006)

The Courses and Curriculum Committee (CCC) is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Evaluating and approving new course proposals for the undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • Evaluating and approving revisions to existing courses for the undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • Evaluating and approving proposals for new tracks in the M.S. program. A track is a coherent set of courses in some general field of study. Tracks should encompass a broad body of knowledge and should be sufficiently distinct from existing tracks.

  • Approving the addition and deletion of courses from established tracks in the M.S. program.

  • Discussing and preparing a proposal for course assignments for each academic year.

  • In coordination with the Vice-Chair of Undergraduate Affairs, assessing the performance of the undergraduate courses for each quarter and generating a written assessment of department performance for accreditation purposes.

  • Recommending to the faculty at large changes to the B.S. program requirements. Approval of the proposed recommendations will require faculty discussion and vote.

  • Recommending to the faculty at large changes to the M.S. program requirements. Approval of the proposed recommendations will require faculty discussion and vote.

  • Recommending to the faculty at large changes to the Ph.D. program requirements. Approval of the proposed recommendations will require faculty discussion and vote.

  • The composition of the Courses and Curriculum Committee is as follows:

    • Each Area Director.

    • One additional member from each area. The member is selected by the Area Director through consultations with the faculty members in the area.

    • The Vice-Chair of Graduate Affairs.

    • The Vice-Chair of Undergraduate Affairs.

  • The Chair of the Courses and Curriculum Committee is appointed by the Department Chairman.

  • The Courses and Curriculum Committee meets at least once every quarter.

The following recommendation was adopted on April 8, 2008 following approval by faculty vote:

If enrollment over the last 3 offerings of any graduate course is under 8 students for every offering, then the frequency and the offering of the course should be reviewed by the Courses and Curriculum Committee (CCC). Following consultations with the instructor-in-charge(s) of the course, CCC may decide to reduce the frequency of the course (e.g., to offer it every other year) or to remove the course from the catalog. In the latter case, the course can still be proposed as a special topics course whenever needed subject to CCC approval.
