Role of the Area Director
(Adopted on August 23, 2006)

The department is consolidated into three areas: (1) Circuits and Embedded Systems, (2) Physical and Wave Electronics, and (3) Signals and Systems. Each area is led by an Area Director. The following is a list of the responsibilities of the Area Director:

  • The Area Director sits on the department's Graduate Fellowship Committee. The committee is led by the Vice-Chair of Graduate Affairs.

  • The Area Director sits on the department's Graduate Admissions Committee along with another faculty representative from the same area. The committee is led by the Vice-Chair of Graduate Affairs.

  • The Area Director sits on the department's Courses and Curriculum Committee.

  • The Area Director supervises the program requirements of M.S. and Ph.D. students in the area and signs on their M.S. and Ph.D. Program of Study forms.

  • The Area Director supervises the transition from M.S. into Ph.D. for students in the area and signs on their Petition to Apply to the Ph.D. Program.

  • The Area Director leads the New Graduate Student Orientation in the area during each fall quarter. The Area Director also leads the Graduate Student Open House in the spring quarter.

  • The Area Director oversees all M.S. Projects in the area. The Area Director sits on the committee of three members that oversees the M.S. Project Seminars in the area, alongside the Vice-Chair of Graduate Affairs and the student advisor.

  • The Area Director leads consultations on curricular issues among the faculty in the area.

  • The Area Director leads consultations on recruitment areas and recruitment candidates among the faculty in the area.

  • The Area Director leads consultations on PhD Student Progress in the area during faculty meetings.

  • The Area Director comments on the performance and results of the PhD Preliminary Examinations for students in the area during the faculty meeting discussions.
