Ph.D. Oral Qualifying Examination
After passing the Ph.D Preliminary Examination, the student is ready to take the Ph.D. Oral Qualifying Examination.
The nature and content of the examination are at the discretion of the doctoral committee, but ordinarily include a
broad inquiry into the student's preparation for research. The doctoral committee also reviews the prospectus of the
dissertation at the oral qualifying examination.
Students nominate a doctoral committee prior to taking the Ph.D. Oral Qualifying Examination. The doctoral committee
consists of a minimum of four members. Three members, including the chair, are inside members and must hold appointments
at UCLA in the student's major department in the School. The outside member must be a UCLA faculty member outside the
student's major department. By petition, one of the minimum four members may be a faculty member from another UC campus.
Qualifications – no exceptions
The Ph.D. Oral Qualifying Examination must be taken when all course requirements
for the Ph.D. program have been completed, and within one year after the student
has passed the Ph.D. Preliminary Examination. To take the Ph.D. Oral Qualifying
Examination:
You must be registered and enrolled during the quarter you plan to take the
Ph.D. Oral Qualifying Examination.
You must have already passed the Ph.D. Preliminary Examination.
You must have completed all course requirements with a minimum GPA of 3.5
in the Ph.D. program.

Once you obtain verbal agreement from the proposed doctoral committee
members, submit the

confirmation of the committee will be emailed out by the Graduate Division.
Once all the committee members agree on a date for the oral exam, check

name, and your major area of study. If a room is not available, you will need
to contact another department for the reservation.
Important
Inform Deeona Columbia of the exam schedule,
otherwise, exam forms will not be prepared.
Email Deeona Columbia and include your name, UID,
date, time, location, and provide a tentative title for your prospectus. This
should be done at least one week prior to your exam.
Notes
The Ph.D. Oral Qualifying Exam cannot take place unless the Graduate Division
formally approves the doctoral committee. Therefore, the committee
nomination form must be submitted at least two weeks before the exam date.
If applicable, your non-resident tuition will be waived for 9 quarters once you
complete the exam requirement. You must pass your exam prior to the first
day of instruction of the quarter it is to be waived.
Advancement to Candidacy
Students are advanced to candidacy upon successful completion of the Ph.D. Preliminary and Oral Qualifying Examinations.
Doctoral Dissertation
Every doctoral degree program requires the completion of an approved dissertation that demonstrates the student's ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in the principal field of study.
Defense of the Dissertation (or Final Oral Examination)
Required for all Ph.D. students in the program.
