Prospective Students
Test of English as a Foreign Language:
International
applicants whose first language is not English must
certify their proficiency in English, as part
of the application process. Such applicants must
arrange to have scores received on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) OR
the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
test forwarded to the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department,
as part of their application. You are not required
to take both tests.
The
TOEFL is administered by the Educational
Testing Service (ETS). Applications may be obtained
from ETS, Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6151,
or consult the TOEFL website.
Arrange
to have the Educational Testing Service forward the
scores to the Electrical Engineering Department. The
TOEFL codes for the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering
and Applied Science Electrical Engineering Department

to be routed to our department. IELTS
tests are administered at accredited Test Centres
throughout the world - there are currently more than
300 Centres, in over 120 countries. Go to the IELTS
website to find
the nearest Center to you. The
results of these tests help applicants determine whether
they are prepared to undertake graduate study conducted
in English before making extensive plans for graduate
study in the U.S. A TOEFL score of at least 560 on the
paper and pencil test or 220 on the computer based test
is the minimum required for applicants to graduate programs
at UCLA; some majors may require higher scores as noted.
An IELTS overall band score of at least 7.0 is the minimum
required.
Applications
are not considered complete without the test
scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS tests.
International
applicants who hold a bachelor’s or higher degree
from a university located in the United States or in
another country in which English is the spoken language
and the medium of instruction, or who have completed
at least two years of full-time study at such an institution,
are exempted from both the TOEFL/IELTS requirement and
the ESLPE (a required test after being
admitted; see the ESLPE webpage
for details).
If
you are planning on applying for a position as a Teaching
Assistant, be aware that there is an additional examination
(either a TSE (Test of Spoken English) or
a TOP (Test of Oral Proficiency). See the page

English
as a Second Language Placement Examination (ESLPE)
This mandatory test is not part of the application process;
however, you need to be aware that all admitted
international applicants are required, upon arrival at UCLA, to take
the UCLA English as a Second Language Placement
Examination before being permitted to register.
You
must take the ESLPE regardless
of your score obtained on the TOEFL or IELTS test, or
any other English proficiency test (e.g., the Test of
Spoken English or the Test of Oral Proficiency fo prospective
Teaching Assistants).
Depending on the results of the ESLPE, you may be required to
complete English as a Second Language courses beginning
in your first term at UCLA. Admission
is canceled for those who do not pass the ESLPE.

If
