The Electrical Engineering Department is proud of the
accomplishments of its undergraduate student body and
encourages its undergraduate students to participate
in regular activities throughout the academic year and
especially our freshman class. Every year, the department
holds an Undergraduate Advising Week.
For 2008, the event is scheduled during the week of
Tuesday, February 19 through Friday, February
22. Freshman and Junior students are strongly encouraged
to participate. During the advising week, the following
events are planned:
Who should attend?
All freshmen and junior students are invited to the
department. Freshmen students are strongly encouraged
to participate.
How do I find the schedule
of the participating faculty? Participating
faculty members will be available for a total of 4 hours
during the week. The schedules of the faculty members
will be posted online on this page for the advising
week. Faculty will be expecting student visits during
these open hours.
What can I learn from
my meetings with the faculty? The
undergraduate students will be welcome to visit with
any faculty member they wish to talk to. Students can
visit with as many faculty members as they wish, individually
or in groups. Students should use this opportunity to
learn about the department, the discipline, research
opportunities, graduate school, industry internships,
etc. Students are welcome to talk to the faculty members
about their educational and research interests and to
seek their input and advice as necessary. Use this opportunity
to become an active member of our larger community.
Which faculty members
should I meet? In the Henry Samueli
School of Engineering and Applied Science, every undergraduate
student is assigned a faculty advisor by the HSSEAS
Office of Academic and Student Affairs. The school requires
all students to meet at least twice with their advisors,
once as a freshman and once as a junior. Electrical
engineering faculty will be available for these meetings
during the Undergraduate Advising Week. You will receive
a letter communication from the HSSEAS Office of Academic
and Student Affairs listing the name of your initial
faculty advisor.
During the Undergraduate Advising Week, you can start
your visit by meeting with your assigned advisor. You
can alternatively visit with any other faculty member.
The initial advisors are meant to facilitate planning
and to give you an initial point of contact. However,
students are allowed to change their initial advisors
and select new advisors that better match their interests.
There will be a cap on how many students each faculty
member can advise in order to permit a balanced load
across the faculty. Students are encouraged to interact
with as many faculty members as they wish and not only
with their advisors.
What social events are
being planned? The advising week
will also involve social events with faculty and staff.
A pizza lunch is scheduled for Tuesday, February
19 (12-1PM). A second lunch event with faculty and
staff is scheduled on the 2nd floor patio (ENGR IV)
for Friday, February 22 (12-2PM).
How can I learn about
undergraduate research opportunities?
Some faculty will provide students with an opportunity
to tour their research labs. In addition, a list of
undergraduate research opportunities will be made available
to students.
When is the orientation
session held? There will be an orientation
session for freshman students with participation by
faculty, staff, senior students, and student organizations
(IEEE, HKN). The session is scheduled for Tuesday,
February 19.
For more information about the event, you may contact
Professor Diana Huffaker, Undergraduate Advising
Week Coordinator, or

Undergraduate Affairs. |
