All applicants are required to submit two copies of official records from all academic institutions from which you earned a bachelor's degree (or higher) and any institution at which graduate level coursework was taken. "Official records" are defined as original documents issued by the institution which bear the actual signature of the Registrar--not a photocopy--and the seal of the issuing institution. However, do not send the original of an academic record which cannot be replaced; obtain a properly certified copy instead. If you have attended more than one institution, separate official records should be submitted for each institution.
All official academic records must show the dates of enrollment; the subjects or courses taken, together with the units of credit (or time allotted to each subject) and, if rank is determined, rank in the total class or group. The records must also include a complete description of the institution's grading scale or other standard of evaluation. Maximum and minimum marks and the steps between them must be indicated.
Unless academic records and diplomas are issued in English by the institution, the official records in their original language must be submitted with an authorized, complete, and exact English translation.
Evidence of conferral of all degrees, diplomas, or professional titles must be submitted. This may be in the form of officially certified copies of the actual diploma, or entries on official records or official statements from granting institutions. In all cases, the statement must include the exact, original title of the degree and the date of its formal conferral (month and year).
Certificates of completion of required courses or of degree examinations cannot be accepted as evidence that the degree was granted.
You are encouraged to visit the UCLA Graduate Division's website on Required Academic Records for specific requirements by country.
You may submit the transcripts yourself, or have the institution(s) send them directly to the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department, to the following address:

The GRE is a standardized test that is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in test centers around the world. This test is an essential component of your application and is used by the Admissions Committee as one criterion of comparison with other applicants. There is no minimum GRE score.
GRE scores on the General (Aptitude) test are required for admission to both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The test must be taken within the last five (5) years before the desired date of admission. All students applying for Fall admission should take the GRE test no later than November 1. Arrange to have the Educational Testing Service forward the scores to our department. The GRE codes for the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science Electrical Engineering Department are:
Institution Code = 4837
Department Code = 1203
For complete information about the GRE, including policies, procedures, test dates, and fees, see the GRE website.
Reminder: The Electrical Engineering Department accepts applications only for the Fall Quarter of any given school year. If you wish to be considered, you are strongly advised to take the GRE no later than the previous November. If you take the GRE later than November, you run the risk that your GRE results may arrive too late.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language:
(TOEFL) scores or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores
International applicants whose first language is not English must certify their proficiency in English, as part of the application process. Such applicants must arrange to have scores received on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) OR the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test forwarded to the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department, as part of their application. You are not required to take both tests.
The TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Applications may be obtained from ETS, Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6151, or consult the TOEFL website.
Arrange to have the Educational Testing Service forward the scores to the Electrical Engineering Department. The TOEFL codes for the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science Electrical Engineering Department are:
Institution Code = 4837
Department Code = 66IELTS tests are administered at accredited Test Centers throughout the world - there are currently more than 300 Centers, in over 120 countries. Go to the IELTS website to find the nearest Center to you.
Upon your request, IELTS scores will be sent to both the Electrical Engineering Department and the UCLA Graduate Division.
The results of these tests help applicants determine whether they are prepared to undertake graduate study conducted in English before making extensive plans for graduate study in the U.S. A TOEFL score of at least 560 on the paper and pencil test, or 220 on the computer based test, or 87 on the internet-based test (or iBT), is the minimum required for applicants to graduate programs at UCLA; some majors may require higher scores as noted.
For the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT), the following are
suggested minimum passing scores for each section and the
required minimum total passing score:
Writing:
25
Speaking: 24
Reading: 21
Listening:
17
Total minimum passing score: 87
ONLY THE
TOTAL SCORE OF 87 IS REQUIRED. The section scores above are suggested
scores.
An IELTS overall band score of at least 7.0 is the minimum required.
Applications are not considered complete without the test scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS tests.
International applicants who hold a bachelor's or higher degree from a university located in the United States or in another country in which English is the spoken language and the medium of instruction, or who have completed at least two years of full-time study at such an institution, are exempted from both the TOEFL/IELTS requirement and the ESLPE (a required test after being admitted; see the ESLPE webpage for details).
If multiple scores are submitted, only the most recent scores can be used to determine admission eligibility.
TOEFL & IELTS scores are considered valid for two years prior to application.
Note: for more detailed information, see the UCLA Graduate Division website.
ALL international applicants must complete and return the Confidential Financial Statement. U.S. immigration law requires that international applicants, if admitted, show documented evidence that sufficient funds to cover all fees, transportation, and living expenses are available for the first year of their studies at UCLA. This must be proved before a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS2019) for a visa can be issued.
For international students, the total amount of money needed for living and educational expenses for the academic year at UCLA is available on the Graduate Division's Anticipated Expenses website and is subject to change without notice. If you plan to bring your family you should expect to add additional costs for a spouse or child (see Anticipated Expenses website for detailed amounts). Health insurance is mandatory and is included in the figure for tuition and fees. (Expenses for the next academic year can realistically be expected to be greater than this amount by approximately US$1,500.00).
For more information, please see the page on Financial Aid for Foreign Students, and the UCLA Graduate Division on Anticipated Expenses for Studying at UCLA.
The online Application Form includes a section in which you must upload your "statement of purpose". In other words, you will be required to describe exactly what you wish to study. This statement should be precise and brief (no more than 2 pages in length). It should not be a personal life history; it should contain only such personal details as will aid the Admissions Committee in evaluating your application.
Your statement of purpose is a means of helping us match your academic and research interests with those of our faculty. This is very important if you are applying for financial support. Be sure to describe exactly what you wish to study at UCLA -- "Electrical Engineering", for example, is not specific enough. State what branch of Electrical Engineering interests you, e.g., communications, signal processing, controls, etc.
The UCLA EE Department requires three (3) letters of recommendation. When submitting your online application, you will be required to simply list one email address for each recommender. That is all you have to do regarding the letters of recommendation.
After you have submitted these email addresses, each recommender will be contacted by UCLA, and they will then submit their letters of recommendation using a secure interface.
NO hard copies of letters of recommendation are required or accepted. The EE Department does not accept letters of recommendation provided through any other service. Only recommendations submitted through the UCLA letter of recommendation interface will be accepted.
