An Energy-Efficient Perspective on Contention-Based Synchronization for 3G and 4G Communications and Sensor Networks

Since the early days of wireless communications, radio resource management has emerged as a key issue in network design. In the era of wireless computing, the need for an efficient allocation of the resources (namely, power, bandwidth, and computational complexity) has become more and more challenging. A smart management of the available resources should include not only the data detection phase, that has received a remarkable interest in the last decade, but also the initial phase of network association, during which the terminals exchange some information with the base station of infrastructured networks, and eventually get access to the system. In the first part of this talk, we will focus on CDMA-based communications, adopting the analytical tools of game theory to derive an iterative and distributed algorithm to trade off satisfactory QoS and prolonging battery life of uplink users. We will then extend this approach to contention-based synchronization for 4G communications, encompassing both OFDMA and SC-FDMA technologies. In this context, we formulate a game-theoretic framework to identify optimization criteria for the system design and to derive a low-complexity and scalable resource allocation procedure based on estimated parameters. Finally, we present a similar formulation to investigate the interactions among low-cost, self-contained, and battery-powered sensors in a radar network for homeland security and tactical combat systems.
Giacomo Bacci received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in telecommunications engineering and the Ph.D. degree in information engineering from the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, in 2002, 2004, and 2008, respectively. Since 2005, he has been with the Dept. Information Engineering, University of Pisa, where he is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. In 2006–2007, he was a Visiting Student Research Collaborator at the Dept. Electrical Engineering, Princeton University, NJ. In 2008, he has also joined Wiser srl, Livorno, Italy, as a software engineer. From May 2012 to April 2013, he is also enrolled as a Visiting Postdoctoral Research Associate at Princeton University. Dr. Bacci is the recipient of the FP7 Marie Curie Intl. Outgoing Fellowships for career development (IOF) GRAND-CRU “Game-theoretic Resource Allocation for wireless Networks based on Distributed and Cooperative Relaying Units”, April 2012 – March 2014, between University of Pisa, Italy (return phase: Dept. Information Eng., Prof. M. Luise) and Princeton University, NJ, USA (outgoing phase: Dept. Electrical Eng., Prof. H.V. Poor). His research interests are in the areas of digital communications, signal processing, and estimation theory. His current research topics focus on resource allocation for multiple-access and relay-based wireless networks, time delay estimation for satellite positioning systems and wireless communications, and channel coding for IMT-advanced technologies.
