Next generation 4G LTE-Enhanced cellular wireless networks are designed to provide broadband high speed services (multicast and unicast) to mobile users. Due to the scarcity of spectral resources that can be employed, networks engage in multi-dimensional adaptations in the dynamic assignment of wireless access network resources. The robustness of cellular wireless networks is also of importance, since failures or degradations of network elements inevitably lead to network service disruptions. Thus, efficient failover mechanisms are required to handle this scenario. 

This dissertation introduces efficient adaptive scheduling algorithms for multicast and unicast operations in cellular wireless networks. Under the multicast operation, the adaptive power and rate scheduling algorithms developed enable base stations to coordinate the transmission of multicast packets to identified mobile users. The algorithms are shown to yield excellent throughput rate performance behavior. Comparisons with LTE Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (MBMS) based schemes have shown these algorithms to offer enhanced spectral efficiency performance, while providing high mobile coverage. Under the unicast operation, the dynamic scheduling algorithms are shown to provide significant enhancement to the throughput capacity of the system. Furthermore, the algorithms exhibit efficient behavior under the failover scenario, whereby neighboring base stations adapt their scheduling operations to provide coverage to mobiles that are located in the area of the failed cell, and to compensate for performance degradations due to failure.


Choo Chin Tan received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1998 and San Jose State University in 2002, respectively. He is currently working towards his Ph.D degree in communications and networking under Prof. Izhak Rubin. His research interests include adaptive scheduling and routing algorithms, network modeling and analysis, self-organization wireless networks and wireless mobile ad-hoc networks.
