Functional Elements for Silicon Photonic Integration and High Speed Optical Interconnects

Speaker: Dr. Hon Ki Tsang, Ph.D.
Affiliation: Professor, Chinese University of Hong Kong

Hosted by IEEE Photonics Society Los Angeles Chapter and The OSA & SPIE Student Chapter

Abstract: Silicon photonics has emerged since the start of this century to become a mainstream platform for photonic integration with applications in telecommunications and data communications in data centers. This talk describes some of our recent research in silicon photonics with examples including subwavelength waveguide grating couplers, hyperuniform disordered photonic bandgap waveguide polarizers and the hybrid integration of graphene on silicon waveguides for photodetectors. Some recent results on using advanced modulation formats in silicon modulators and mode division multiplexing in silicon interconnects will also be presented.

Biography: Hon Ki Tsang received the B.A. (Hons) in 1987 and the Ph.D. in 1991 from the University of Cambridge. From 1991-1993 he was an SERC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Bath. He joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1993 as a lecturer (Assistant Professor), becoming an Associate Professor and Professor in 1996 and 2003 respectively. In 2002-03, he worked at Bookham Technology plc UK on the development of one of the first commercially deployed silicon photonics devices in telecommunications (the four channel array electronic variable optical attenuator which was used in Nortel’s metro networks). He returned to the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003, and served as department chairman 2010-2016. He is currently Director of the Center for Advanced Research in Photonics at CUHK and Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics. He is also a Fellow of the Optical Society (OSA).
