Power Delivery and Management for Heterogeneous IoT Systems

Abstract: Efficiently and reliably managing high quality power is a primary challenge in Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Based on current projections, future IoT will provide valuable networked connections of embedded heterogeneous devices and sensors. Many of the IoT edge devices will be powered from non-conventional energy sources – wirelessly from spatially distributed power supplies and/or locally from energy harvesting sources (e.g., piezoelectric, thermal, solar, and electromagnetic). The energy budget, constrained by inherently lower quality of power of these non-traditional power sources, will become a critical system resource and a primary limiting factor for scalability of IoT systems. The future of heterogeneous systems is strongly dependent upon the quality and efficiency of the on-chip power, availability of dynamically controlled voltage levels, and the ability to manage power in real-time.

In this talk, a comprehensive study of on-chip power delivery systems will be presented along with objectives, challenges, and a framework for architecture-, methodology-, and circuit-level integrated solutions.
The concept of distributed, locally intelligent power delivery will be introduced. A platform will be described for scalable intelligent power delivery and management to control the overall energy budget with distributed on-chip power networks (PNoC). This modular platform supports the integration of functional blocks, emerging technologies, and adaptive power features without requiring redesign of the overall power delivery system. The PNoC approach allows to efficiently deliver and manage high quality power in heterogeneous ICs, while addressing critical issues of design complexity and scalability in next generation power delivery systems.

Biography:  Inna Partin-Vaisband is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois in Chicago. She received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in, respectively, 2006 and 2009, and the Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 2015. Between 2005 and 2009, she held a variety of R&D positions at IBM Haifa, Israel. Her research is currently focused on innovation in the area of distributed power delivery and locally intelligent power management that facilitates performance scalability of heterogeneous ultra-large scale integrated systems. Special emphasis is placed on hardware security and emerging technologies such as wireless power transfer, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, and photonic networks. A method for distributed power delivery and management in heterogeneous ICs has been proposed and patented by Dr. P.-Vaisband in 2017. Her research into heterogeneous power delivery and management has been published in her book On-Chip Power Delivery and Management, 4th Edition. A distributed system of ultra-small high-efficiency on-chip power supplies previously designed, fabricated, and tested by her was in mass production within the Galaxy S5 android smart phones as part of the Qualcomm Snapdragon product line.
