Biography
Gregory J. Pottie received the B.Sc. degree in engineering physics from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1984, and the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1985 and 1988, respectively. From 1989 to 1991, he was with the Transmission Research Department of Codex/Motorola, Mansfield, MA, where he was involved in high-speed digital subscriber lines and coding and equalization schemes for voice-band modems. He has been on the faculty of the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department since 1991, where he is now a Professor and Associate Dean of Research and Physical Resources.

Research Interests
Prof. Pottie's research focuses on communication systems and information theory, with applications to wireless sensor networks and other autonomous systems.

Together with his graduate students, he is currently pursuing systems research on a variety of projects related to wireless communications. This includes research on uses of channel coding, robust and rapid channel estimation, and access protocols for wireless networks. One focus area is the development of wireless sensor networks, for which students are researching network self-organizing, data fusion algorithms, and cooperative location finding and communication; students will typically develop algorithms and perform analysis and simulations, and often also interact with other graduate students performing the hardware implementation. This may also include design experiments to gather the necessary data on the physical situation, e.g., RF and seismic propagation.
