Biography
Dr. Briggs graduated from Oakland University in 1994 with a Ph.D. in Systems
Engineering. He was awarded the B.E.E. and M.S.E.E. degrees in 1965 and 1969,
respectively.
He is a retired Staff Research Engineer at Delphi Corporation. His area of expertise lies
in control systems and simulations of physical systems. His past research projects with
Delphi and General Motors include developing novel control methods for Adaptive
Cruise Control and other Active Safety Systems for motor vehicles. In addition, he has
learned much about most automotive systems by osmosis over his 48-year career at GM
and Delphi.
Dr. Briggs is a member of IEEE, where he is Chair of the Coastal Los Angeles Section.
He has received the General Motors President`s Council Award for Outstanding
Contributions, the UCLA Excellence in Teaching Award, and the IEEE Distinguished
Service Award. He is also the team adviser of UCLA’s Team Awesone that won the 2011
IEEE Region 6 Southern Area MircoMouse Contest, an autonomous robot that solves
mazes without human guidance. His interests include working with students on student
competitions, tennis, skiing, photography, and learning Cantonese.
