2015 Annual Research Review

Please join us for the 2015 Electrical Engineering Annual Research  Review, that will take place on Friday, February 27, 2015, on the 5th floor of the Engineering IV Building. 

This one day event showcases the department's research, and includes graduate students presentations and posters, short faculty presentations, and distinguished plenary lectures. A main focus of the event is forming closer connections and interactions with industry and innovation labs, as well as with our alumni. Registration is free but required in advance.

Mukund Padmanabhan graduated with a B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from UCLA. He first worked as a Research Staff Member at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, in the area of speech recognition, eventually managing an Advanced Telephony Speech Algorithms group there. He then moved to a hedge fund, Renaissance Technologies LLC, where he is currently a Partner and Research Staff Member. His current research interests are in statistical financial modeling.

Mukund's academic record includes writing a book related to digital filters, publishing around a dozen papers in peer-reviewed IEEE journals, and over 40 papers in various peer-reviewed international conferences, in the areas of signal processing and speech recognition. He has also given invited talks and tutorials at several international conferences, served on the IEEE speech technical committee, and in the technical committees of over a dozen international conferences, and as an editor for an international journal. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE. He also holds around 20 patents (with other co-authors). One of his journal papers received a "best paper" award from the IEEE signal processing society in 1999. His other awards include Research Division Awards from IBM in 1995 and 1996.

In additional to academic and professional activities, he also serves as President of Guru Krupa Foundation (GKF), a philanthropic private foundation that supports various educational, social and cultural causes.

Subramanian S. Iyer (Subu) is an IBM Fellow at the Systems & Technology Group, Microelectronics Division and Director of the System Scaling Technology Area at IBM Microelectronics. He obtained his B.Tech. at IIT-Bombay, and Ph.D. at UCLA. His key technical contributions have been the development of the world’s first SiGe base HBT, Salicide, electrical Fuses, embedded DRAM and 45nm technology used at IBM and IBM’s development partners. He also was among the first to commercialize bonded SOI for CMOS applications through a start-up called SiBond LLC. He has published over 250 papers and holds over 70 patents. His current technical interests and work lie in the area of advanced packaging and three-dimensional integration for system-level scaling, as well as the long-term semiconductor and packaging roadmap for logic, memory and other devices as well as counterfeit prevention. He has received several outstanding technical achievements and corporate awards at IBM and is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology as well as a Master Inventor. He is an IEEE Fellow and a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE EDS as well as a member of its Board of Governors He is a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Bombay and received the IEEE Daniel Noble Medal for emerging technologies in 2012. He also studies Sanskrit in his spare time.

Dr. Iyer will be joining the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department.
