Controlled Mobility in Sensor Networks

Abstract: We consider the problem of controlling motion of a ‘data mule’ in a sensor field to minimize travel time and improve latency of data delivery from the sensor nodes. A data mule is useful in modeling a number of problems in embedded systems including, of course, the motion of a mobile data collection node. We show that our formulation can be used in solving scale-parameterized scheduling problems, including dynamic speed scaling in processors for energy efficient computing. In this talk, we will discuss the DMS framework and its constituent problems on path selection, speed control and task scheduling with location and time constraints. Time permitting, we will discuss the broader impact of location as an observable in embedded systems and how it can be captured in a reactive framework that provides a systematic treatment of mobility in application functions.

Biography: Rajesh Gupta is QUALCOMM professor in Computer Science & Engineering at UC San Diego, California. He received his B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1984, MS in EECS from UC Berkeley in 1986 and a Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford in 1994. Earlier he worked at Intel Corporation, Santa Clara and on the Computer Science faculty at University of Illinois , Urbana-Champaign and UC Irvine. His current research is focused on energy efficient and mobile computing issues in embedded systems. In recent years, Gupta and his students have received a best paper award at IEEE/ACM DCOSS’08 and a best demonstration award at IEEE/ACM IPSN/SPOTS’05. He has served as EIC of IEEE Design & Test of Computers and chair of the steering committee of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. Gupta is a Fellow of the IEEE.
