Claude Houghton

Houghton is a master writer. He's English, and so maybe has a different slant on the language than an American. But for me, his writing has something that is hard to find anywhere. He is a truely master wordsmith. When reading his books, I'm in awe of his use of the english language.
So far I have read only two of his books: I am Jonathan Scrivener and I was Ivor Trent. In both these books, the plot is woven around a mysterious person whom we don't meet till the end. The scenes are mostly in rooms where people speak to each other without much action. They sound boring, but I couldn't put either of them down. I'm hoping, as I read more of Claude, to be able to focus in on exactly what it is about his books that are so compelling, but so far all I know is that they are.
