It's hard to think of Perry Mason without thinking of Raymond Burr and
the TV series. (it's funny, I just read an ESG story from the 40's
called "Death Rides a Boxcar" who's main character is a guy named
Jayson Burr. I wonder if even then he knew about Raymond Burr and
thought he would make a good Perry?) But the stories are some of the
best page-turners I've ever read. It's not that Perry or Della or Paul
are such terrific characters, but no one can write a plot like
Gardner. His twists and turns are just out of the blue and keep you
riveted to the page. For an afternoon of reading, nothing is better
than Perry Mason.
