Robert Parker

Parker was a revelation to me. I was living in Philadelphia and used to go to a store called "Murder, Inc". I became friends with the proprietor, and he told me about a new mystery series he liked called "Spenser". There were only two at the time. I read "The Godwulf Manuscript" and was hooked. The best thing about these books are the realism and the dialog. The plots are basic, just a few things happen, but somehow the combination of the characters, the plot, and the dialog makes for a totally unique package. For those who have seen the "Spenser for Hire" show on TV, the books are nothing like them. Robert Urich was totally wrong for Spenser. Hawk was OK. There's something about these books that keeps you involved with them and coming back for more. For those who have not read Spenser, start with the early ones. They're the best.
