Short Bio

Shaolei Ren is a final-year Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering Department, University of California, Los Angeles, working with Prof. Mihaela van der Schaar. He received his B.E. and M.Phil. degrees from Tsinghua University in 2006 and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2008, respectively, both in electrical and computer engineering. His research interests include green cloud computing, smart grid, etc.

Shaolei Ren received Best Paper Award at IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2009. He was selected by IBM T.J. Watson Research as one of the 10 worldwide Emerging Leaders in Multimedia and Signal Processing in 2010. He received the continuing fellowship, in recognition of his performance (ranked No. 1) in the department-wide Ph.D. Prelim Exam in which each student is examined independently by 8 professors in both oral and written forms. He also received the prestigious Dissertation Year Fellowship 2011-2012 from UCLA.

Recent Updates

  • 02/2012: I was invited to give a talk in the department seminar at University of Southern California.

  • 02/2012: I will give research talks at multiple institutions including Boston University.

  • 02/2012: My paper “Provably-Efficient Job Scheduling for Energy and Fairness in Geographically Distributed Data Centers” (co-authored with Dr. Y. He and Dr. F. Xu) was accepted by ICDCS 2012 (acceptance ratio: 13%=71 out of 515).

  • 11/2011: My paper, co-authored with Dr. J. Park and Prof. M. van der Schaar, was accepted by Infocom 2012 (acceptance ratio: 18%).

  • 04/2011: I received internship offers from multiple research labs, including IBM T.J. Watson Research, Microsoft Research, NEC Labs and Bell Labs. I will join Microsoft Research, Redmond, as a research intern in the summer.
