The service allows WMDM (Windows Media Device Manager) to copy audio content from a computer to a portable audio player. You can disable this service if you don't use Media Player. On Windows XP/2003 the WMDM PMSP service is an instance of svchost.exe called Portable Media Serial Number. The most annoying thing about this service is that it is not uninstalled after you uninstall Windows Media Player 7? and just takes up s pace and memory. There is a built-in way to uninstall it though. Just type "mspmspsv -u" from the command prompt (without quotation marks) and follow the on-screen instructions. ***************************************** Disable RealPlayer realsched.exe When you install RealPlayer, it will add a process called realsched.exe to your startup configuration. realsched.exe periodically checks the Internet for updates. Even worse, even if you take it out of your startup configuration in the registry, simply running RealPlayer will make it return. While realsched.exe is relatively benign, I don't like processes running on my system without my permission. Here's how to disable it. - Launch RealPlayer - Click on the Tools and choose Preferences - Under the Automatic Services category, choose Message Center - Press the button marked "Configure Message Center" - UNCHECK the option labeled Checking - Check for new messages - Choose Yes when the warning pops-up - Also, under Automatic Services, choose AutoUpdate and Uncheck Automatically download ... If you haven't already, run Hijackthis or MSCONFIG to remove it from your startup configuration as well. ***************************************** Disabling Speed Launcher in Acrobat 7.0 and Adobe Reader 7.0 The Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher is a program installed by Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and Adobe Reader 7.0 to optimize the speed of both programs. The Speed Launcher is installed into your computer's Common Startup group and runs when your computer starts. The Speed Launcher quickly opens and closes all of the files that Acrobat or Adobe Reader will use when the application starts. Opening and closing the files allows your virus protection software to check these programs and add them to its list of safe files. The application opens more quickly because these checks have been performed. To disable the Speed Launcher, remove the Speed Launcher icon from your Startup folder. ***************************************** What Is the Osa.exe File and What Does It Do? The Office Startup Assistant (Osa.exe or OSA) is a program that improves the performance of Office XP programs. Office Setup places a shortcut to the Osa.exe file in the Windows Startup folder; the file is named "Microsoft Office". The Osa.exe file does the following: - Initializes automation. - Initializes some of the common fonts installed by Office XP. - Handles certain commands (New Office Document, Open Office Document, Help, and Screen Saver) on the Start menu and on the Office Shortcut Bar. - Displays Microsoft Outlook notifications when the Office Assistant is available. The Osa.exe file initializes the shared code that is used by the Office XP programs. When you use the Osa.exe file to initialize shared code, the Office XP programs start faster. If the Office programs, instead of Osa.exe, initialize the shared code, the programs take longer to start. Osa.exe can be safely removed from startup. The Office Shortcut Bar (OSB) may no longer start automatically, if you configured the OSB to start when Windows starts. Command-line switches with OSA.exe: -b This switch starts the Office Shortcut Bar when it is used with the "-l" switch. -f This switch opens the Open Office Document dialog box at startup. -n This switch opens the New Office Document dialog box at startup. -s This switch starts the specified screen saver at startup. Note that if there is no screen saver selected under Display in Control Panel, you receive a message stating this. -o This switch starts the Office Shortcut Bar. Osa.exe starts the OSB if the following registry setting is present: Registry Path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Shortcut Bar Name: AutoStart Value: 1 Type: DWORD Registry Path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Osa\Autostart Name: NotFindFast Value: 1 Type: DWORD ***************************************** The Windows User Mode Driver Framework service (Wdfmgr.exe) appears in Windows Task Manager after you install Windows Media Player 10 After you install Microsoft Windows Media Player 10, a new process appears in Windows Task Manager. This process is named the Windows User Mode Driver Framework service (Wdfmgr.exe). The Startup type setting for this process is Automatic. Note The Windows User Mode Driver Framework service is a driver component that is used by Windows Media Player 10. The Windows User Mode Driver Framework service supports synchronization of content with hardware players. For example, an MP3 device is a hardware player. If you do not have a hardware player, you can set the Windows User Mode Driver Framework service Startup type setting either to Disabled or to Manual. Later, if you obtain a hardware player and if you want to synchronize it with Windows Media Player 10, you can enable the Windows User Mode Driver Framework service by changing the Startup type setting back to Automatic. This issue occurs because the Windows User Mode Driver Framework service is installed when you install Windows Media Player 10. By default, the Windows User Mode Driver Framework service Startup type setting is Automatic. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, set the Windows User Mode Driver Framework service Startup type setting either to Disabled or to Manual. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK. 2. In the list of services, right-click Windows User Mode Driver Framework, and then click Properties. 3. Click the General tab. 4. In the Startup type box, click Disabled or Manual, and then click OK. 5. On the File menu, click Exit. ***************************************** Real audio cache can get really big. clean it up: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Real\RealOne Player\History C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Real\RealOne Player\Temp ***************************************** How to get rid of the annoying resident mobsync: regsvr32 "%systemroot%\system32\mobsync.dll" /u ***************************************** Dr Watson logs are located in: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\DrWatson ***************************************** Remove the ISP branding in Internet Explorer ISP branding includes Toolbar images, Default Page URL, Window Title, Search Bar, customized Search URL, customized Support URL in the Help menu, customized menu option for WindowsUpdate [Tools menu].
