Abstract:

Thin film ferrites or ferromagnets in the sub-micron-scale are known to possess unique properties such as high in-plane permeability, high ferromagnetic resonant (FMR) frequency, as well as tuneability and nonlinearity. Another fast-growing area is RF magnetoelasticity, which provides voltage tuneable or activated spin-wave devices through induced mechanical strain. These unique properties have led to a variety of applications in power electronics and RF devices, such as circulators, isolators, antennas, frequency selective limiters (FSL) and signal-to-noise enhancers (SNE).

Nevertheless, the lack of powerful modeling tools dealing with interactions between oscillating magnetization and EM waves hinders the in-depth understanding of the role of magnetism in dynamic and high-frequency systems, and limits its application in RF electronics. We have attacked the grand challenge through development of a multi-physics, multi-scale time-domain solver that can model the five orders of magnitudes scale difference from µm to cm, including the physics from electrodynamics, elastodynamics and spin dynamics. The solver is accurate and efficient, and is aimed to be developed into a unified computation platform.
