Biography

Vwani P. Roychowdhury received the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1989. From 1991 to 1996, he was a faculty member with the School of electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue University, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1995. In 1996, he joined the University of California, Los Angeles, where he is currently a Professor of electrical engineering. He also serves on the faculty of the Biomedical Engineering Interdepartmental Program.

Prof. Roychowdhury holds the patent for the methods and apparatus for enhancing grayscale. He has co-authored several books including Discrete Neural Computation: A Theoretical Foundation (Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1995) and Theoretical Advances in Neural Computation and Learning (Boston, MA: Kluwer, 1994).

Research Interests

Professor Roychowdhury's research interests include models of computation, quantum and nanoelectronic computation, quantum information processing, fault-tolerant computation, combinatorics and information theory, advanced statistical processing, and adaptive algorithms.

Prof. Roychowdhury's work on collaborative spam filtering has been featured in a NewScientist Magazine article: "Teamwork will beat spammers". The work discussed in this article is based on his paper: "Let Your Cyber Alter Ego Share Information and Manage Spam", coauthored with Joseph S. Kong, P. Oscar Boykin, Behnam A. Rezaei, and Nima Sarshar.
