Multimodal Imaging For Oral Health Based On Optical Coherence Tomography System: A Pilot Study

Abstract:

In this study, we developed an integrated multi-functional imaging system that is capable of providing anatomical (via optical coherence tomography, OCT), functional (via OCT angiography, OCTA) and molecular imaging (via light-induced autofluorescence, LIAF) for in vivo oral health assessment.  Firstly, an automated registration and segmentation method for gingival tissue volume micrometer resolution measurement was proposed based on 3D OCT images.  Then, the image processing and quantification method of gingiva vascular morphology was developed based on OCTA en-face projection image.  Meanwhile, the light-induced autofluorescence imaging was conducted to detect the plaque on the tooth.  These methods may provide useful information for the early diagnosis and prevention of the gingiva inflammation.

Biography:

Geng Wang is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington, Seattle.  He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Precision Instrument at Tsinghua University in 2018.  Geng’s research interests include biomedical imaging (optical coherence tomography, OCT), large FOV & high resolution imaging, weak and small light signal detection, and optical attitude sensors. He has authored or co-authored more than 12 research papers and holds 7 granted patents. He was awarded the First Prize of Scientific and Technology Award by China Instrument and Control Society (CIS) in 2018.  Part of his research has been transformed to industrial application from 2018.
