Modular, Scalable, and Distributed Processing Architectures for Massive MIMO Base Stations

Abstract:  Massive MIMO, i.e., telecommunication systems where the number of antennas at the base station is much larger than the number of terminals, is one of the suggested techniques for 5G telecommunication. In this presentation, it is shown that uplink decoding and downlink precoding, using either conjugate beam-forming, zero-forcing, or MMSE, can be distributed in a scalable and modular manner. Hence, it is possible to realize a base-station where the processing for each additional antenna is handled by an additional processing unit, which leads to a highly modular architecture. The computational requirements of such a unit are derived and fundamental relations between frame format, interconnect structure, link latency, and matrix inverse time are presented for zero-forcing and MMSE. A design example shows that for an LTE-like system, it is enough to have a single complex multiply-add unit for each antenna, even when serving up to 20 users. Finally, the centralized matrix inversion implementation is discussed.
