Biography
Alan J. Laub holds faculty appointments in the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. He received the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in mathematics from the University of British Columbia in 1969, the M.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Minnesota in 1972, and the Ph.D. degree in control sciences from the University of Minnesota in 1974. From 1974 to 1983, he held positions at CWRU, the University of Toronto, MIT, and USC. In 1983 he joined UCSB as Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and, from 1989 until 1992, was Chair of the Department. He was a founding Co-Director in 1991 of the Center for Control Engineering and Computation. He became Dean of the College of Engineering at UC Davis in 1996, serving until 2000.

From 2002 to 2004, he served the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science as Director of the $60M/yr SciDAC (Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing) Program. In 2003 he co-chaired the High-End Computing Revitalization Task Force for the National Science and Technology Council (under the auspices of the Administration's Office of Science and Technology Policy). He joined UCLA in spring 2005. Dr. Laub is a Fellow (1986) of the IEEE and is also a member of SIAM and ACM. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous leading journals. He received the Distinguished Member Award in 1991 from the Control Systems Society and served as President of the Society in 1991. In addition, he has served the Society in numerous other capacities over the past 25 years, including two three-year terms as an elected member of the Board of Governors. He received the Society's Control System Technology Award in 1993 for his “pioneering work in algorithms and software for computer-aided control system design.” Dr. Laub's research interests are in numerical linear algebra, numerical analysis, high-end scientific computation, and computer-aided control system design, especially algorithms for control and filtering. He has authored or co-authored over 200 technical papers and has given several short courses in these areas. His algorithms and software enjoy widespread commercial use and he has been instrumental in encouraging the use of numerically stable algorithms and reliable mathematical software in the control and systems community for over 30 years. Dr. Laub has been active as a consultant to a number of major companies and federal government laboratories.

Dr. Laub's research interests are in numerical linear algebra, numerical analysis, high-end scientific computation, and computer-aided control system design, especially algorithms for control and filtering.
