Conference Paper Awards

  • A paper entitled, “Voltage-Induced Dynamics in Nanoscale Magnetic Tunnel Junctions: Higher-order Anisotropy Contributions to Ferromagnetic Resonance and Switching” by Juan G. Alzate with co-authors: Dr. Pedram  Khalili, Pramey Upadhyaya, Dr. Sergiy Cherepov, Dr. Jian Zhu, Dr. Jordan Katine, Dr. Juergen Langer, Dr. Berthold Ocker, Prof. Ilya N. Krivorotov and Prof. Kang Wang, received the Best Student Presentation Award from the IEEE International Magnetics Conference (Intermag 2014), in Dresden, Germany on May 4-8, 2014.
  • Phd Student Chung-Tse Michael Wu (Advisor: Prof. Tatsuo Itoh) was awarded second place in the Student Design Competition for his X-band Low Phase Noise Oscillator entry at the 2014 IEEE International Microwave Symposium was held in Tampa Bay, Florida on  June 1-6, 2014.
  • A paper entitled, “An 8-Bit 4-GS/s 120-mW CMOS ADC” by Professor Behzad Razavi and his Postdoctoral scholar Hegong Wei with co-authors, UCLA alumni, Peng Zhang and Bibhu Datta Sahoo was awarded the 2013 IEEE CICC Best Paper Award.
  • The paper, “A Blocker-Tolerant Wideband Noise-Cancelling Receiver with a 2dB Noise Figure,” by David Murphy, Amr Hafez, Ahmad Mirzaei, Mohyee Mikhemar, Hooman Darabi, Professors Frank Chang and Asad Abidi received the 2012 IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits Best Paper Award.
  • The paper, “Anamorphic Transform and its Application to time-bandwidth compression,” by Dr. Mohammad Asghari and Professor Bahram Jalali received the 2013 Best Paper Award from IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology.
  • The paper, “Quantize-map-forward Relaying: an Experimental Study,” by Professors Christina Fragouli and Suhas Diggavi with co-authors, Melisa Duarte, Ayan Sengupta and Siddartha Brahma was selected for the 2013 Association for Computing Machinery Mobile and Ad hoc Networking and Best Paper Award.
  • The paper entitled, “Quantize-map-forward Relaying: an Experimental Study” by Professors Suhas Diggavi and Christina Fragouli with co-authors: Melisa Duarte, Ayan Sengupta and Siddartha Brahma, received the 2013 Association for Computing Machinery Mobile and Ad hoc Networking and Computing (ACM Mobihoc) Best Paper Award.
  • Prof. Jason Cong Received Best Paper Award from FPGA 2013 The paper entitled Polyhedral-Based Data Reuse Optimization for Configurable Computing, by Louis-Noel Pouchet, Peng Zhang, P. Sadayappan and Jason Cong was awarded the Best Paper at the 21st ACM/SIGDA International Symposium on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA’13).  The paper was published on ACM Press, February 2013, pp. 29-38.
  • Professor Ali H. Sayed is co-recipient, with former PhD student Zhi Quan and co-author Dr. S. Cui, of the 2012 Best Paper Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society for their article by Z. Quan, S. Cui, and A. H. Sayed, “Optimal linear cooperation for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks.“
  • The journal entitled “Behavior-Level Observability Analysis for Operation Gating in Low-Power Behavioral Synthesis,” by Professor Jason Cong with co-authors from UCLA Bin Liu and Rupak Majumdar, and Zhiru Zhang from AutoESL Design Technologies, Inc. is a recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2012 ACM  Transactions  on Design Automation of Electronic Systems (TODAES).
  • Dr. Henrik Borgstrom and Professor William Kaiser recently received an American Society for Engineering Education Best Paper award in 2012 for a publication on their new hands-on instruction technology developed for the UCLA undergraduate curriculum. This publication described development of the Inverted Pendulum System that has been supplied in individual kit form and distributed to students and student groups serving over 280 students over two quarters in the UCLA EE141 Control Systems course.
  • The paper entitled “Modeling and Theoretical Performance Analysis for Dynamic Spatially Distributed Energy-based Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radios over Shadowed Fading Channels in Public Safety Networks,”  by Chih Kai Chen, Ralph E. Hudson, and Professor Kung Yao received the 2012 IEEE CORAL (COgnitive Radio Applications and aLgorithms) Best Student Paper Award.
  • The paper entitled, “A New Paradigm in Solar Energy Harvesting: Characterization of High Absorption Nanopilar Array Photovoltaics “ by Timothy Brockett, Harish Rajagopalan and Professor Yahya Rahmat-Samii received the 2012 Ernest K. Smith USNC-URSI 2nd Best Student Paper Prize Award.
  • The journal, “Problem of Timing Mismatch in Interleaved ADC’s” by Professor Behzad Razavi received the 2012 IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference Best Invited Paper Award.
  • The paper, “Multiterminal Source Coding under Logarithmic Loss” by Dr. Thomas Courtade and co-author Tsachy Weissman was selected for the 2012 ISIT Best Student Paper Award.

  • The paper, “Structural Characterization of InGaAs Axial Inserts in GaAs Catalyst-Free Nanopillars Grown by Selective-Area MOCVD”, by Joshua Shapiro together with Andrew Lin and Professor Diana Huffaker was selected for the 2012 Electronic Materials Conference Meeting Best Student Presentation
  • The paper, “Transponder Using SIW Based Negative and Zeroth Order Resonance Dual-Band Antenna and Sub-Harmonic Self-Oscillating Mixer”, by Chung-Tse Michael Wu, Y. Dong and Professor Tatsuo Itoh received the 2nd place in the 2011 Asia Pacific Microwave Conference Student Paper Competition.
  • The paper “Dual Band Isolation Circuits Based on CRLH Transmission Lines for Triplexer Application” by Hanseung Lee and Professor Tatsuo Itoh won the Best Paper Award in the 2011 Asia Pacific Microwave Conference.
  • The paper, “Systolic Arrays for Lattice Reduction Aided MIMO Detection,” by Ni-Chung Wang, Professors Ezio Biglieri and Kung Yao won the 2011 IEEE Journal of Communications and Networks Best Paper Award.
  • The paper, “To Sample or Not to Sample: Self-Triggered Control for Nonlinear Systems”, by Associate Professor Paulo Tabuada and Adolfo Anta won the 2011 George S. Axelby Award at 50th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control.
  • The paper entitled “Bayesian Networks-Bsaed Interval Training Guidance System for Cancer Rehabilitation,” by Myung-kyung Suh, Kyujoong Lee, Alfred Heu, Ani Nahapetian, Majid Sarrafzadeh, received the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Mobile Computing, Applications, and Services (MobiCASE2009)
  • The paper entitled “Finite Element Analysis of Dielectric Metamaterial Structures Excited by an NRD Guide” by N. Michishita, T. Ueda and Professor T. Itoh receives the 2008 Research Award at the 26th Conference of Japan Society for Simulation Technology.
  • Graduate students Jae Kim and Chih-Wei Yao (Professor A. Willson, advisor) were selected to receive the 2008 Best Student Paper Award at the International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (IEEE ISCAS) held in Seattle, for their paper entitled “A Programmable 25 MHz to 6 GHz Rational-K/L Frequency Synthesizer with Digital K_vco Compensation.“
  • A paper by Professors William Kaiser and Majid Sarrafzadeh, along with collaborators from the UCLA Medical School and Veterna’s Administration, was awarded the Best Paper Award at BodyNets 2008.
  • A paper by Professor M. C. Frank Chang and co-authors (J. Cong and and G. Riemann) received the Best Paper Award at the 2008 IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA).
  • At the 2006 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference, the APMC 2006 Prize was given to a paper co-authored by K. Leong, A. Lai and Professor T. Itoh.
  • Graduate student V. Raghunathan (Professor B. Jalali, advisor), received the Best Student Paper Award at the 2006 Advanced Solid State Photonics (ASSP) Conference.
  • A paper by Professor I. Rubin and his Ph.D. student R. Zhang received the best unclassified paper award at the 2006 IEEE MILCOM conference.
  • Professors A. Abidi and B. Razavi were named among the top ten authors in the 50-year history of the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, the most prestigious design conference in the semiconductor industry. This is an industry-wide recognition that UCLA’s Integrated Circuits & Systems research is among the top such programs worldwide.
