Localization with mmWave Massive-MIMO Systems

Speaker: Prof. Gonzalo Seco-Granados
Affiliation: Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona

Abstract: The use mm-wave and massive MIMO technologies is one of the novel elements in 5G systems, specifically in the so-called 5G New Radio standard, and they offer the potential to satisfy the throughput demands of enhanced mobile broadband services thanks to the large available bandwidth and directional interference-free transmissions. An additional potentiality is that mm-wave signals transmitted and received at massive MIMO systems have the capability of providing very accurate time delay, and angles of departure and arrival estimates between user devices, between users devices and base stations, and even between base stations. This capability is giving rise to a new positioning technology: 5G localization, which may be the ideal complement in terms of coverage and performance to the widespread solution based on GNSS. This talk will address the basics of 5G localization: models, beam design, base station deployments, performance bounds, algorithms for channel estimation, localization, tracking and mapping. The focus will be placed on single-base station positioning, which is one of great promises of 5G technologies.

Biography: Gonzalo Seco-Granados received the Ph.D. degree in telecommunications engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain, in 2000. From 2002 to 2005, he was member of the technical staff at European Space Agency, involved in the design of the Galileo System. He performed seminal work on the application of antenna arrays in GPS receivers, and he is inventor of patented techniques that are widely used in Galileo receivers. Since 2006, he is with the Department of Telecommunications and Systems Engineering, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, where he is a Professor. He has been a principal investigator of more than 30 research projects, and he has co-authored over 230 contributions in journals and international conferences. He is senior member of the IEEE. In 2016, he served as General Co-Chair of the International Conference on Localization and GNSS, and as Executive Co-Chair of the 8th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 14th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/ SPSC). He is co-organizer of Special Sessions dealing with wireless localization at IEEE CAMSAP 2017, Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers 2018, EUSIPCO 2019 and IEEE VTC Fall 2019. In 2014, he was a recipient of the ICREA Academia Award. In 2015 and 2019, he was a Fulbright Visiting Professor with the University of California, Irvine, USA.
