Abstract:  Recording electric fields in single-shot with terahertz bandwidth is needed in applications ranging from spectroscopy of irreversible processes, and quantum cascade lasers, to free-electron lasers. A particularly standard strategy consists in probing the electric field under investigation, using ultrashort laser pulses, and to analyze the modified pulse in single-shot. Several variants have been investigated the last two decades, but the applications constantly require important challenges to be addressed. We review here several advances in the field. In particular we will present recent strategies aiming at high temporal and spectral resolutions, as well as high sensitivity. We will present recent achievements using accelerator-based sources as well as table-top sources. We will show how digitizers and Time-Domain Spectroscopy systems can now reach several terahertz bandwidth over recording lengths of tens of picoseconds, and at Megahertz repetition rates using photonic time-stretch. We will also discuss some of the next challenges that remain to be solved.

Biography:  Prof. Serge Bielawski is a researcher at PhLAM Laboratory in Lille, France. His initial research activity (1989-2003) focused on experimental and theoretical aspects of instabilities, in particular in lasers, as chaos, control of chaos, and pattern formation. Since 2003, he has been developing a novel activity in Lille at the interface between accelerator physics, photonics and nonlinear dynamics, in collaboration with several synchrotron radiation and Free-Electron Lasers facilities, in particular UVSOR (Japan), Super-ACO and SOLEIL (France), KARA (Germany), and European XFEL.
