Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Network Architectures and Technologies: P2P, GPON, and NG-PON

Abstract: FTTH (Fiber to the Home) network is a very famous term, and everybody wants to have their home connected with fiber optics. One of the biggest challenges in the implementation of FTTH network is to find the cost-effective solution. It will be shown that looking for cheap components is not enough for building cost-effective network, rather we need to find a way to integrate those components into one unit, and consider it as a whole. In the first part of this lecture, it will be shown how the choice of optical components and architecture can influence a way for finding a cost-effective solution. GPON (Gigabit capable Passive Optical Network) is a good example of how the practical solution can be achieved by combining expensive and cheap components with standard single-mode fiber. In the second part of the lecture, the new generation (NG) PON technologies such as XGPON (10 Gigabit PON) and NGPON 2 (PON with a capacity of up to 80 Gbps) will be considered. Finally, the combination of all mentioned PON technologies implemented on one fiber will be explored.
