First-Gen Bruin Engineer Strives to Make a Difference in Building a More Equitable Environment
Mia Irvin-Pollard, a third-year electrical engineering student at UCLA, shared her story about her acceptance to the Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity (CEED) and how she found her home in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).
Irvin-Pollard’s favorite class was electromagnetism and circuit theory. She credited Assistant Professor Yang Zhang for connecting theoretical concepts to real-world applications after each lecture. You can read more about Irvin-Pollard’s story here.

Welcome Visiting Professor, Dr Boris Vaisband
We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Boris Vaisband to our department as our esteemed visiting professor and Acting Director of UCLA CHIPS starting March 2024. Dr. Vaisband brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that will undoubtedly enrich our academic community.
Dr Vaisband’s research interests are in heterogeneous integration and advanced electronic packaging, neuromorphic circuits and systems, and formulation of design methodologies, including power delivery, communication, thermal aware design and floorplanning, and testing. Some applications of interest are ultra-large-scale artificial intelligence systems, high performance computing, hardware obfuscation, and edge and bio-compatible devices.
Dr. Vaisband holds a PhD and MS from the University of Rochester, NY, and a BSc from the Technion, Israel. From 2017 to 2019 he was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles. Between 2008 and 2015 he held multiple hardware design positions at Google Inc., Cisco, and Intel.
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Boris Vaisband as he embarks on this exciting journey with us. We look forward to the invaluable contributions he will undoubtedly make to our academic community!
